Disability Incarcerated: A Symposium

This week, scholars, students, and disability and social justice advocates gathered for a two-day event centered around the recent book Disability Incarcerated (pictured above). The event was designed to dialogue and map the intersections of policing, imprisonment, and the disabled body. Panelists and speakers included several members of Haas Institute faculty clusters including Susan Schweik, Na'ilah Nasir, Jonathan Simon, Peter Manoleas, and Scott Wallin. The gathering focused on the history and current state of disabled people under incarceration in the United States and Canada, and what a more inclusive society might be in the future. This event included showings of the films Deaf in Prison and Bethel as well as a performance from Sins Invalid.

On Being with Krista Tippett

Award-winning host of OnBeing,  Krista Tippett, invited Haas Institute Director  john a. powell for an hour-long conversation on the spiritual work and work of self that we must do in order to have more productive conversations and progress on matters of race and belonging. Originally airing on March 9, the event was broadcast nationwide and is available by podcast. You can also watch the entire video on the On Being website.

The Haas Institute's Nadia Barhoum presented at the Food Justice Forum on February 21, at Holy Names University in Oakland. Nadia spoke on the role of corporations in the global food system. Read more about this event. 

Black History Month at Zaytuna College

john a. powell spoke on the topics of Othering and Belonging at Zaytuna College, the first accredited Muslim liberal arts college in the United States. john highlighted three different ways of being: economic, political, and ontological being, which includes how groups marginalize and Other individuals based on identity, self, spirit, and religion.

Richmond Community Workshop

Richmond Community Workshop FlyerRise Together has partnered with the Insight Center and the Haas Institute at UC Berkeley to better understand the potential and limits of various policy interventions, assess the needs of our most vulnerable populations, and analyze the segmentation of households and strategies. Workshop participants will discuss new research and their own experience and perspectives on questions like: How could the Bay Area cut poverty in half? What would a $15 minimum wage do for your community? What would transitional job programs do? Seating is limited so please register.

Racial Ideology and the Backstory of the Incarceration of Japanese Americans

During World War II, why did so many Americans accept the mass incarceration of 110,000 persons of Japanese ancestry, two-thirds of whom were American citizens? The Haas Institute's Associate Director Michael Omi will discuss this topic as well as the discriminatory practices and policies that forced incarceration on Japanese Americans during and after the war. This arts and culture event at Berkeley City Club will take place on April 7 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets here.

Belonging and Community Health in Richmond

The Richmond Pulse reported on the Haas Institute's newest research brief, entitled Belonging and Community Health in Richmond. The report uses a series of maps and data analysis that assess the extent of gentrification in Richmond by analyzing changes in the demographics and housing market between the years 2000 and 2013. Note authors Eli Moore, Samir Gambhir, and Phuong Tseng, "If regional trends of accelerating housing prices and persistent inequality hit Richmond, a substantial part of the city could be vulnerable." Download the report here.
