TWIN CITIES HOST FIRST CONVENING ON RACIAL EQUITY IN MINNEAPOLIS
Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges speaks about inequality at the first convening of the Governmental Alliance on Racial Equity, held at the University of Minneapolis on August 5 to 6.
MINNEAPOLIS, MN–Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman co-hosted a convening of government and community leaders from throughout the country in Minneapolis on August 5-6 to strategize on advancing racial equity. The Twin Cities convening was organized and led by the Governmental Alliance on Race and Equity, a new project of the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society focused on advancing racial equity and opportunities for all. 

Keynote speakers included john powell, Director of the Haas Institute, Julie Nelson, Director of the Local and Regional Government Alliance on Race & Equity, and Glenn Harris, President of the Center for Social Inclusion. The convening's workshops focused on equity in the opportunity areas of housing, jobs, transportation, education, and health.

TOWARDS RACIAL EQUITY & OPPORTUNITY IN SAN FRANCISCO SCHOOLS
Haas Institute Director john powell recently addressed over 400 administrators and teachers in the San Francisco Unified School District. powell stressed the need for racial equity and opportunity structures in education, as well as the ways in which our unconscious biases can affect how educators interact with students from different socioeconomic and racial backgrounds.
OPPORTUNITY IN AMERICA: THE PROBLEM WITH THE PAUL RYAN PLAN
Congressman Paul Ryan issued a report on opportunity and poverty in American that has sparked an important national conversation. Fifty years after the War on Poverty, the report asks the right question about opportunity in America, but suffors from some major conceptual flaws. 
Haas Institute assistant director Stephen Menendian explains the problem with the Ryan plan in "Opportunity in America."
BERKELEY PROFESSOR JESSE ROTHSTEIN, MEMBER OF THE HAAS INSTITUTE'S ECONOMIC DISPARITIES FACULTY CLUSTER, AWARDED RESEARCH GRANT
UC Berkeley economist Jesse Rothstein will receive a research grant from the Washington Center for Equitable Growth to study student school finance reform and educational equity. Rothstein is a member of the Haas Institute's Economic Disparities Faculty Cluster.

PBS documentary focuses on continued school segregation
Fifty years after Brown v. Board, America's schools are still "Separate and Unequal." The new PBS documentary examines the growing racial divide in America's schools, using the work of Rucker Johnson, professor at the Goldman School of Public Policy, and member of the Haas Institute's Race, Diversity and Educational Policy Faculty Cluster, to explain the correlation between school integration and improved graduation rates of African American students in the U.S.
